Route Planning and Itinerary Design
Standard and custom options for Southern cultural travel
penninite.info designs and operates small-group cultural routes through the Southern United States. Scheduled departures have run since March 2016, beginning with a five-day route between Memphis, Tennessee, and Clarksdale, Mississippi. As of January 2025, the company operates 11 routes across 9 states, with 34 scheduled departures per year and a cumulative total of 1,412 travelers since 2016.
Route Formats and Scheduling
penninite.info designs self-guided walking routes through historic districts in Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans, Natchez, and Birmingham. Each route covers 2 to 5 miles and includes 12 to 18 points of interest with addresses, architectural dates, and access notes. Routes are delivered as PDF files and mobile web pages. Average completion time is 3 to 5 hours at a casual pace. The standard package includes a printable map, historical summaries for each stop, and a list of nearby public restrooms and shaded rest areas. Routes are updated every 6 months to reflect closures or renovations. In 2023, penninite.info maintained 26 historic neighborhood routes.
Architectural Documentation Kits
Architectural documentation kits provide measured drawings, construction dates, and style classifications for buildings along selected Southern routes. Kits cover Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Art Deco structures. Each kit includes 40 to 60 building profiles with photographs, architect names when known, and historical occupancy records. The service is used by preservation groups, university architecture programs, and independent researchers. Kits are available in digital PDF and printed binder formats. Production time is 10 to 15 business days. Data sources include county property records, National Register nominations, and local preservation society archives.
Local Cuisine Trails
Local cuisine trails identify restaurants, markets, and food producers tied to Southern regional cooking. Routes in Louisiana include Creole and Cajun establishments; Georgia routes include Lowcountry and soul food venues; Tennessee routes include meat-and-three restaurants and barbecue pits. Each trail lists 8 to 14 stops with operating hours, price ranges, signature dishes, and reservation requirements. The standard trail package includes a digital map, dietary notation, and estimated travel time between stops. penninite.info does not operate the food establishments and does not receive commissions from listed venues. Menu items and hours change seasonally; verification calls are made every 90 days.
Group Size and Daily Pacing
Music heritage routes trace blues, country, gospel, bluegrass, and rock traditions across the South. The Mississippi Delta route covers Clarksdale, Greenwood, and Indianola with 10 to 14 stops including juke joints, recording studios, and birthplaces of musicians. The Nashville and Memphis route covers 8 to 12 stops. Each route includes background notes on 20 to 30 artists, venue histories, and live music schedules for selected weekends. Audio excerpts are licensed from partner archives. Route length ranges from 1 to 4 days by car. Updates occur quarterly.
Route Leaders and Local Specialists
City experience modules combine a historic neighborhood walk, one cuisine stop, and one music or architecture site into a single half-day or full-day itinerary. Modules exist for Atlanta, Charleston, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Savannah, Richmond, and Louisville. Each module states the meeting point, start time, duration, walking distance, and cost. Half-day modules run 3 to 4 hours; full-day modules run 6 to 7 hours. Modules are available as self-guided digital packets or with a local historian guide. Group size for guided modules is capped at 14 participants.

Custom and Group Services
Tailored routes for private groups, schools, and organizations
Every published route is assembled from the same set of components: lodging, ground transportation, guided site interpretation, scheduled meals, and admission fees. Each component is listed in the route description before booking so that different routes can be compared on identical terms.
Custom Route Design
Custom route design creates itineraries for private groups of 2 to 12 travelers. The process begins with a 45-minute consultation to define dates, interests, budget, and mobility needs. penninite.info then proposes a route outline within 7 business days. Revisions are included for up to 14 days after the first draft. Final deliverables include a day-by-day schedule, maps, reservation instructions, and site notes. Custom routes are priced from $1,200 plus $75 per travel day. Design work does not include booking hotels, flights, or rental cars. Typical production time is 3 to 5 weeks.
Lodging and Ground Transport
Lodging is arranged at independent and historic properties wherever capacity allows. Of the 47 properties used across all routes in 2024, 29 sit on the National Register of Historic Places or within a designated historic district. Room categories are three-star equivalent or above, and every property is inspected in person at least once every 18 months. Where a route uses a property with fewer than 20 rooms, the group occupies two or three buildings within walking distance of one another.
Group Departures
Guided interpretation is delivered by two groups: penninite.info route leaders, who hold a minimum of three years of regional guiding experience, and local specialists contracted per route. In 2024 the company worked with 61 specialists, including 22 historians, 14 musicians, 11 cooks or food producers, and 14 archivists or museum curators. Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes and are capped at group size.
Meals and Culinary Programming
Every route includes a fixed number of scheduled meals: between 6 and 12, depending on length. Kitchen visits, market walks, and tastings account for roughly one third of them. Examples include a Lowcountry boil preparation visit near Beaufort, South Carolina; a tamale-making session in Greenville, Mississippi; a cast-iron and cornbread demonstration in Asheville; and a country-ham curing visit outside Smithfield, Virginia.
Educational Institution Programs
Admission fees for all listed sites are included in the route price. The average admission total per traveler in 2024 was $186. Not included: airfare, airport transfers outside the scheduled windows, alcohol beyond listed tastings, travel insurance, gratuities, and personal purchases. Optional costs include a single room supplement of $620 to $1,140 depending on route and season, and extra nights at $145 to $310.

Booking and Cancellation
Booking and cancellation terms are provided in writing at the time of reservation. Standard bookings require a 25% deposit for guided and group services. Self-guided digital products are paid in full at purchase. Cancellations made 30 or more days before a guided departure receive a full refund minus a $50 administrative fee. Cancellations made 14 to 29 days before departure receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made fewer than 14 days before departure receive no refund. Date changes are allowed once per booking with 21 days notice, subject to availability. Refunds are processed within 10 business days.
Deposits, Payment Dates, and Cancellation Schedule
Seasonal availability varies by route and region. Peak travel periods are March through May and September through November. Summer routes in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida operate with reduced schedules due to heat and hurricane season. Winter routes in the Appalachian corridor may have limited access to high-elevation sites. Music venue schedules are highest in April, June, and October. Cuisine trails operate year-round, but some markets close for one to two weeks during winter holidays. Route availability calendars are updated on the first business day of each month.
Transportation Notes
Transportation notes describe recommended vehicle types, driving distances, and parking conditions for each route. Multi-state driving routes average 120 to 250 miles per travel day. Urban routes are walkable and accessible by public transit in Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans, and Atlanta. Rental cars are not included in standard packages. Group departures include passenger van or chartered bus transport. Some rural routes require a vehicle with adequate clearance for gravel roads. Parking costs in historic districts range from $10 to $35 per day. Toll road information is listed where applicable.
Accommodation Referrals
Published rates range from $1,180 per person for the three-day Natchez and Vicksburg route to $3,410 per person for the seven-day Nashville and Appalachian Music Route. Rate categories are double occupancy, single supplement, and third-person sharing. Rates are held for the calendar year in which a departure is listed and are not adjusted after a booking is confirmed.
Practical Information and Operating Details
Practical preparation information
Information affecting scheduling, physical requirements, and travel logistics is published for every route before booking. The details below apply to all departures unless a route page states otherwise. Route-specific exceptions appear in the pre-departure packet issued 45 days before departure.
Travel Dates and Seasonal Conditions
Route calendars follow regional climate patterns. Delta and Memphis departures run March through November. July and August departures schedule two indoor sessions per day and begin before 8:00 a.m., because average afternoon temperatures in Clarksdale reach 92°F. Lowcountry departures run February through May and September through November; the summer window is excluded because of hurricane season and average relative humidity above 70%. Appalachian departures run April through October, and the Blue Ridge Parkway segment is removed from early-April departures when sections above 3,500 feet may be closed.
Physical Requirements and Daily Distances
A standard route includes digital maps, site descriptions with historical context, estimated walking or driving times, and a list of practical services such as restrooms, parking, and pharmacies. Self-guided digital routes include 12-month access for one traveler. Printed packages add a field guide and physical maps. Guided services add a licensed historian, group coordination, and one meal on full-day tours. Multi-day guided routes include lodging coordination, some meals, and local transport as specified. Airfare, rental cars, travel insurance, and personal expenses are not included.
How much walking is typical?
Walking distance varies by route and module. Historic neighborhood walking routes cover 2 to 5 miles total, usually spread over 3 to 5 hours with stops. City experience modules cover 1.5 to 4 miles. Multi-day guided routes average 2 to 4 miles of walking per day, with some days under 1 mile. Terrain includes paved sidewalks, uneven brick streets, and occasional stairs in historic buildings. Eight of 14 standard routes offer step-free alternatives. Detailed distance and surface notes are provided before booking. Participants with mobility concerns can request a vehicle-supported version on 6 routes.
Arrival, Departure, and Airport Transfers
Route start and end cities are served by commercial airports: Memphis (MEM), Charleston (CHS), Savannah (SAV), Nashville (BNA), Knoxville (TYS), and Asheville (AVL). One scheduled group transfer is included at the start and one at the end of each route, timed to a window rather than a specific flight. Transfers outside those windows are quoted separately and typically run $60 to $140 per vehicle.
Why did previous travelers choose penninite.info?
Group bookings of 8 or more are handled by the same office that manages individual reservations, with a single invoice and a designated contact for the group. Custom dates are built from existing route outlines rather than new itineraries, which keeps verification and supplier contracts in place. Custom date requests require 90 days of lead time.
